Inception

Journal Entry: Sat Jul 31, 2010, 8:38 PM
Inception is Super

Leave it to Nolan to not only make the greatest superhero movie of all time (Dark Knight, duh!), but arguable the best Sci Fi movie of all time to go along with it. To explain anything about the film story-wise would spoil certain elements. I think the best way to go into the thing is to not know a single thing about it.

Start is a little slow, though it picks up and never stops half-way through. Only one guy left to the bathroom in a packed theater in Manhattan. That never happens. There were only a rare, few bits where I'm the CGI was evident. Though it wasn't distracting enough to ruin the movie and happens early on.

There's a lot of ideas and interpretation of the ending. I think this is an excellent read to sum it up:

The Ultimate Explanation of Inception

Uncharted 2

Journal Entry: Mon Oct 19, 2009, 6:45 PM
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

I try to restrict myself to reviewing games I've beaten all the way through but I'm going to go out on a limb to say the rest of Uncharted 2 is just as amazing as the several hours I already plugged into it. Visuals? Stunning. Voice-acting? Spot on. Narrative? Great. (A little, erm, predictablish. But what action-adventure isn't? Though I'm sure there's lots more in store when I rip towards the end.) This is Indiana Jones the game, and it's glorious. Every scene so far tries to squeeze as much awesome out as possible.

Point out faults, you say?
  • Sometimes Drake hugs/covers behind objects I didn't intend him to.
  • Sometimes grab take-downs were not happening where I expected them to.
  • Being a PC gamer, shooting precision isn't as, erm, precise as I would like (but when is it ever going to be on a gamepad?).
These instances were not numerous or distracting enough to make a scratch on the experience.

You own a PS3? Buy-it. If you're an action gamer you owe it to yourself to at least play through it. Even the girlfriend/boyfriend will get a kick out of just watching.

Note: Have not played coop.

Note 2: Have not played the original. For shame?

COD4, FO3, Helvetica

Journal Entry: Sun Dec 28, 2008, 9:23 PM
Call of Duty 4

Maybe the most enjoyable single-player FPS experience I've had since Goldeneye and Half-Life 2. Sure, it's full of scripted events -- as usually is the case w/ the CoD series -- but they're all too good. Don't pass it up.

On the downside, it is shorter than your average FPS. When it's this jam-packed and spares you the drone of repetition of other FPS'ers, you must forgive it, especially when it gives you one of the biggest jaw-dropping 'wtf' sequences in a game and leaves you satisfied by its end.

:star::star::star::star::star-half:

Fallout 3

Big fan of Fallout 2 way back when and a fan of Oblivion, so when I heard the Oblivion guys were on the Fallout license I couldn't wait! And I'm not disappointed.

What people say is true: (1) you need to plug in several hours before most start to enjoy it and (2) blowing heads off does not get old.

Downside? Character animations are horrid, as they were in Oblivion, especially when attempting to play in third-person view. Come on -- is that how people look when they hop around? And I really hoped they would retain that Fallout 2 humor and cultural reference abuse.

Still, an amazing experience. Yet to finish, so I'll spare a star-rating.

Helvetica (movie)

I'd say pretty much a must watch for designers. The film offers interesting perspectives on Helvetica's mainstream use and history. Helvetica</b> (the typeface) is pretty much everywhere. This quote from the documentary sums it up:
It's air, you know. It's just there. There's no choice. You have to breathe, so you have to use Helvetica.
I use it all the time, almost as a necessity where I work, both fortunately and unfortunately.

Still playing TF2

So, again, steam name is halfliquid, but I change the alias w/ the "liquid" bit of it to random things that are floating around my head. Even if you don't play TF2, feel free to add me.

Also getting some Puzzle Quest in there. Who knew the age old puzzle-game element of "matching colors/symbols in a row" thrown in w/ RPG elements could be so much fun. (Not I!)

Will be looking into CoD4 as well as the near-future investment of a PS3 w/ the impending arrival of GTA IV looming.

I went to see it again for the second time in theaters, which is a rare occurrence for me. (I think last time around this happened it was for the ROTK.) To be honest, I was supposed to go to a car show and not a screening but when you see a line wrapping around the block, you know, the cars just seemed a little less interesting? Note to self: buying tickets? Do it online!

Anyway, super movie. I loved the way it was filmed. Hearing complaints about it having a weak story. Can't vouch for that. It stayed true to the graphic novel. Frank Miller gets another nod from me.

More of a big screen experience than a rental if you ask me. Of course I'd still love to get my hands on the DVD for the behind-the-scenes and making-of!

Also saw this the other day. Cool. It bombed though. PS: I love Quentin Tarantino but Planet Terror > Death Proof. Death Proof just dragged at parts. QT is known for his long conversations shots but, oh my, it just didn't seem to fit after Planet Terror, which was showed first and is off-the-walls actiony and silly.

Rental if you do not dig the old exploitational movie stuff.

Hello there!
Due to personal issues, and as you can see by my hat-less stature (I feel so nekkid!), I am no longer staff here at this fine establishment. It has been a glorious [insert number that I forget because it has been so long] years working besides the individuals on staff now and with those that are not with us anymore, but things were just not fitting like a good pair of pants should.

I want to thank every pixelist and member on this site who made my stay as staff as wonderful as it was. I don't regret a single day of any of it. From reading suggestions or relocating countless "misguided" deviations: you guys made my job a happy one and an experience I would never forget.

And that leads me to this: I apologize for not leaving staff sooner. An odd thing to say, but hear me out! The past few months on the site have been lackluster in terms of activity on my part, and that's putting it kindly. There's dust on my notes and, hey, that's not even possible last time I checked. It served as a poor reflection on me, the community and the fine staff here. You all deserve better. I hope in time I can be forgiven. I owe you all a Boston Crème donut. You swing by, you swing by.

Computer's last breath

Anyone know why a computer would take several minutes to start up (after several reboot attempts) and sometimes turns itself off out of the blue? At boot-up, seems like it can't find the primary HD. But if it's a succes after the n'th try, and I restart later on, it finds the HD right away. Almost as if something has 'warmed-up' and it detects w/ ease henceforth. Weird. If my HD was failing -- and it is an old computer so it's not out of the question -- why does it act in this manner where it works fine once I get it on. Maybe it's the motherboard or powersupply. Hmm.

How Not To Schedule

bang bang bang

Situate your classes so that you wake up early in the morning to take two of them then go to work for X amount of hours and then have a class after said work session. I have a new found respect for people with loaded agendas (going to school full-time and working full-time or even a couple part-time jobs)!

Catch Up

There is a backlog of notes that I'm going to attempt to thrash into. Anyone that knows me knows that I respond to every note that I get (whether it be suggestions or comical banter or the latest trends in pudding production, etc.) and over the past few months it has been difficult to upkeep.

But it's something I'm going to try and continue to do. If people are taking the time to write things, the least they deserve is a response. Though some notes I get just have me staring at the monitor in silence.

Stingray deaths

Now this is just stupid.
At least 10 stingrays have been found dead and mutilated on Australia's eastern coast since "Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin was killed by one of the animals last week, an official said Tuesday, prompting concerns of revenge attacks on the normally docile fish.

Come on. Steve would not have wanted that. Do you wake up the next day feeling good that you did that to a fish?

'Crocodile Hunter' Steve Irwin dies

Steve Irwin, the hugely popular Australian television personality and environmentalist known as the "Crocodile Hunter," was killed Monday by a stingray during a diving expedition, Australian media said. He was 44.

Always entertaining and a true icon of television.

A lot of things I'm liking. Have not done serious heavy use, however, but from what I've been tinkering with so far, you can't help but say that it was an improvement over the last and we're heading in the right direction. Kudos to all the coding monkeys and people who pulled together to make it happen as well as those working hard to fix things up and make improvements. The only place it's going now is 'better' from here.

Lady in the Water

mmm cereal

I'll tell you what the problem is with people "expecting" things with M. Night Shyamalan movies (and that may be just it: the "expecting" part). The Sixth Sense was sooooo good that people go into the theatres -- and this is just my theory -- and miss the point of it all thinking it's going to be another Sixth Sense. Goers probably spend the whole time watching the film attempting to figure out the "twist". Now, there's nothing wrong with this .. up to a point. When it passes the line where you are not having fun with the experience and you don't let the movie entertain you as it should, then you're thinking too much and you ruin M. Night Shyamalan's movies. (But, yeah, I understand that keeping you guessing is part of M. Night's whole thing -- but, come on! Don't kill it for yourself.)

With that said, if you saw the trailer for the film or read anything about it, you should know that it's a fairy tale -- a bedtime story, if you will. Just remember that if you plan to go see it. Because if I hear another person telling me, "Oooh! It was so fake!" -- I mean, hello? Yes, it's fake. First off, it's a movie. Second off, it's a movie about a fairy tale.

:slow:

I thought it was beautiful story. The plot was sorright, it seemed to me, and one could follow along and it all somehow (somehow .. ) fit nicely toward the end (tada!). Some characters were more memorable than others. Paul Giamatti was, well, Paul Giamatti. He's a good actor.

However, still, for me: Signs, The Village, The Sixth Sense > The Lady in the Water.

See it if you have an imagination (we're a die'n breed apparently!) and if you like M. Night. Otherwise, rent it!

Superman returns

This is turning out be a heck of a time to be a comic book fan. X-Men, Spiderman, Batman, Sin City: all these great comic-to-movie adaptations that, well, are actually good. (Did I miss any? Must have!) Superman Returns is no exception. It's entertaining, action packed, funny, and pays its respect to Superman instead of trying to take it in a crazy new direction. (And, yes, they call it Superman "Returns" because he's back from a couple years of checking out what was up with his home planet. There's only a light introduction if you're never heard of him before -- but who doesn't know the story by now?)

This Brandon Routh fellow plays the role of Superman quite well. Definately has a Reeves quality about him, I would say. And .. when's the last time you have seen Kevin Spacey in a bad movie? Wasn't he bald in Se7en too? Hmm.

Go see it! Don't want to spoil anything. Worth the price of admission.
